And Reprobus likes his new job as a transportation worker. He’s meeting people. He’s fulfilling his human need to contribute and create. He’s getting good tips. One day this perfectly robed little boy comes to the bank where Reprobus is eating his dog’s breakfast and asks him for a ride. The boy’s polite enough, but as they’re crossing a particularly snarky bit of the river the boy seems heavier than he was.

He looks okay though. Then a couple more steps, he’s even heavier. Now ascending from the trough just shy the further bank, the boy is unbearably heavy and Reprobus is sure that he won’t make it and that they both will drown. He does make it, only after a real big struggle, however. And the boy thanks him, and he apologizes for the prank. It gets boring being king of the world, the boy says. You’re great, I like you, the boy goes on, and I like having you working for me. Keep up the good work. The boy vanishes. Reprobus goes into town with a strange buzz on and talks with Christians who rename him Christopher, the carrier of Christ. He talks up

his new boss everywhere for months and months, until the Romans get sick of his barking and behead him. Which is Christ’s gift to him:
